ESCO Limited, Port Hope, Ontario.
A heavy metal fabrication company with electric arc furnaces and steel casting facilities, with recuperators, heat exchangers, and baghouses, was studied under a Ministry of Energy grant. Several hundred thousand dollars of savings were identified. Recommendations dealt with modifications to the ventilation system and baghouse and provided conditions for energy savings in the shop and foundry.

Opus Ferrum, Weston, Ontario.
A company heat treating components for manufacturing was studied under a Ministry of Energy grant. Savings were defined in the operation of the heat treat furnace, the plant lighting, and compressed air system.

B & W Heat Treating, Kitchener, Ontario.
A large plant with multiple heat treatment furnaces (induction electrical, salt bath) was studied under a Ministry of Energy grant. Feasibility of changing furnace technology to natural gas and changes in scheduling of electric furnaces were examined. Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting were also studied.

Norton Abrasives, Niagara Falls, Ontario.
A large metallurgical plant was studied for savings in electric furnace operation and material handling. Options for improving material handling were presented.

Ingersoll Machine & Tools, Ingersoll, Ontario.
A large manufacturing plant was studied under a Ministry of Energy grant. The study identified heat loss due to general exhaust of contaminated air and energy loss due to compressed air leaks. Recommendations to control sources of airborne contaminants reduced heated make up air requirements from 140,000 CFM to 110,000 CFM. This change and other changes in plant compressed, water and electrical systems added up to $60,000.00 of annual cost savings.

Aberfoyle Metal Treaters, Guelph, Ontario.
The largest reheat furnace in Canada, being used to heat treat steel from Stelco, was studied for possible savings. Over $100,000.00 worth of savings were identified. Recommendations included: maximizing loads, adding insulation, adding efficiency software and burner controls, and utilizing a heating time control.

G.S. Technologies, Kansas City, Missouri.
A large steel mill complex was investigated for energy savings related to the steam plant. Recommendations were implemented to decentralize the system with three new boilers. Piping would be reduced and heat could be more responsive to the demands of different areas in the complex. Installation cost was $400,000.00 U.S. Annual savings estimated at $500,000.00 U.S.

1-Eight large high schools were studied under a Utilities Management Program feasibility study grant. Over $300,000.00 worth of annual energy savings were identified with a project cost of approximately $1,850,000. Typical conservation measures included chiller replacement, free cooling, direct digital controls and energy management systems. Installed in 1995/96. Actual savings exceeded estimates.
